Complex Spine

Complex Spines at the Manchester Centre for Clinical Neurosciences (MCCN) is provided by 21 Consultant Neurosurgeons and 12 Consultant Spinal Surgeons.

Between this group of 33 Consultant Surgeons, augmented by 4 Staff Grade Neurosurgeons, the MCCN provides the full range of both elective (planned) and emergency spinal surgery.

This cohort of surgeons provides the Consultant input to what is the busiest Spinal Unit in the UK.

The range of treatments on offer includes for degenerative spinal disease, spinal deformity, traumatic spinal injuries, spinal malignancy, as well as the full range of spinal tumours, including those involving the spine itself, the spinal cord and the spinal nerve roots.

We are proud of the fact that there is a close working relationship between the Neurosurgeons and the Spinal Surgeons, with individual patients directed to the Surgeon with the most appropriate skill set for that particular spinal problem. Invariably there is a group of Spinal Surgeons with expertise in whatever sub group of spinal problem that may be encountered.

The spinal team uses a multidisciplinary approach to spinal care with input from Specialist Nurses and Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists as well as Pain Specialist Nurses and Doctors.
